Department of Inspection and Standards

     

The primary mission of this website is to educate Providence residents as to the necessary steps one must take to either build or modify a dwelling or business. The Department of Inspection and Standards is charged with enforcing compliance with the Providence Zoning Ordinance and the Rhode Island State Building Code. In order to comply there are certain permits and approvals that one must receive before legally making changes or building in Providence. This site is aimed at making this process clear and easy. This site has a number of checklists outlining the requirements. The checklists range from how to obtain a building permit for a 1-2 family residence, to installing a furnace.

The checklists are separated into Divisions within the Department of Inspection and Standards as well as on this website. The Divisions are Structures and Zoning, Mechanical Equipment, Electrical, and Plumbing. To view one or more checklists for a certain job, click on the link for the appropriate Division and find the job on the list. This site will also provide people with contact information for the Department of Inspection and Standards, important frequently asked questions involving building and the department of inspections, links to related and helpful other sites, and recommendations for building.

    • A. Please review the 200ft Radius Plan in "PDF" format from the link below. The information needed to complete the radius map is available in the Tax Assessor's Office at Providence City Hall
  • When do I need a plumbing permit?
    • A. “A plumbing permit is needed on any new plumbing installation or when alterations are made to an existing plumbing system. A master plumber must apply for a permit, or a homeowner of a single family owner occupied dwelling.”
