Clean, warm clothing, boots & blankets urgently needed; collection bins to be set up in public buildings
PROVIDENCE – Mayor David N. Cicilline today called upon city workers and residents to take part in the annual Mayor’s Coat Drive, to help Rhode Island’s homeless and those in need.
“As we approach the winter months, it’s important to reach out to families who don’t have the resources to buy warm clothes and offer a helping hand,” said Mayor Cicilline.“I am asking residents, businesses, students and workers to donate warm and clean winter clothing to the annual coat drive, at a city office building near you.”
New or clean, gently-used (and oversized) adult winter coats, hats, gloves and mittens, boots, heavy socks, sweatshirts and sweatpants and blankets will be donated to Crossroads Rhode Island, for distribution to families and individuals in need. The City will also collect new personal care items: shampoo, toothpaste, shaving goods and feminine hygiene products.
Specially-marked bins will be set up in public buildings throughout the city beginning September 28.
For those who prefer to make a financial donation, please make a check or money order payable to Crossroads Rhode Island and drop it off directly at their offices at 160 Broad Street.Donations can also be made on the Crossroads Rhode Island website.
The Mayor initiated the Mayor’s Coat Drive in January 2003, in response to a bitter cold snap that left many low-income and homeless families and individuals in distress. For more information, call 401.351.4300 ext. 627.
