PRESS RELEASE

MAYOR GIVES BOARD IMMEDIATE POWER TO REVOKE LICENSES OF ADULT ENTERTAINMENT ESTABLISHMENTS EMPLOYING MINORS

Mayor’s Executive Order provides first enforcement against recent loophole discovered in Rhode Island State law

PROVIDENCEMayor David N. Cicilline today announced the signing of an executive order that will provide the first enforcement power against adult entertainment establishments that employ minors. Executive Order Number 2009-9 prohibits the Board of Licenses from issuing a license to any adult entertainment establishment that employs any individual less than eighteen years of age, or allows a minor to perform at the establishment.

“Exploiting minors is totally reprehensible and the loophole that allows it must be closed immediately,” said Mayor David N. Cicilline. “This order gives the Providence Licensing Board some real power while the process of developing local and state legislation is underway.”

Mayor Cicilline supports Providence City Councilman Michael Solomon’s initiative to draft a local ordinance addressing the matter. The purpose of the executive order is to create a tool that can be employed immediately to protect minors from exploitation by the adult entertainment industry. Executive Order #2009-9, signed on Friday, July 24th, went into immediate effect.
