DOWNTOWN PARKS
Up until 1994, the Kennedy Plaza area in downtown Providence was virtually the only public park area enjoyed by Downtown workers and visitors. A new network of parks and open spaces now complement the recently re-located rivers. The new parks include Water Place Park, Memorial Park and the Providence River Walk which stretches from Water Place Park past Memorial Park along the Providence River to James Street in Fox Point. The new parks and the renovated riverfront have become a stage for concerts, for public sculpture, for Trinity Summer Shakespeare, and for Providence’s signature public art event WaterFire.
Many of the public programs in Water Place and along the Providence River Walk were operated by the Parks Department, but have now been put under the umbrella of the Department of Art, Culture & Tourism.
