Why is my tangible tax delinquent?
The tangible tax can be a little tricky.
Here is an outline of the common reasons your tax may be delinquent.
You paid the tax, but you paid late--- or you missed a quarterly payment.
RI state law controls interest accrual: when ANY quarter is paid after the due date, the ENTIRE portion of the unpaid bill is "due" AND interest is assessed at 1% a month from July to the date of payment.
Moving without notifying the Assessor..Bill goes to your old address.
The Assessor maintains the address database. If your company office/account due department moved without notifying the Assessor, the bill will not automatically follow.
"One Year in Arrears" You forget you even had that tax.
Perhaps the most confusing part of the tax is that the tax bill represents what taxable items you owned last year. So, whatever is in the Assessor's database in 2010 will receive a bill in August, 2011, and the first quarter is payable on September 24, 2010.
My tax jumped through the roof!
The most likely reason is you didn't file the Assessor's inventory verification by the end of year due date. If the tax jumped about 25%, that is probably the reason.
